"Compassionate, hardworking, supportive, dedicated..."

About: Uch at Westmorland Street

What I liked

My Father passed away at the Heart Hospital on 3/2/12 after an emergency admission following cardiac arrest. The care he received the moment he entered the hospital was fantastic. We were kept informed about his care throughout his admission. The nursing staff on CICU North were hardworking and so professional and caring. The Doctor was fantastic and so understanding, reassuring, compassionate and helpful, as were other medical staff. A staff member in Patient Affairs showed great compassion and understanding and went out of his way to make things easier for us.

What could be improved

A ward clerk on CICU North was efficious and unpleasant on 2/2/12. We were told we couldn't come on to ward when due to the critical nature of my Father's illness we were given unlimited access to the ward. We felt as if she could do with some education around compassion and empathy when a family member is at the end of life.

The visitors room by CICU is freezing at night! We spent several nights sleeping there at night and were freezing! The visitors room often got very busy and more seating would be good. Plus a machine that worked to get refreshments. Some nice pictures on the wall would also help to provide a break from what is happening on ward.

Anything else?

After bad experiences of local hospital care for cardiac patients, we were so reassured and comforted by the care my Father got at the Heart Hospital. Our local hospital is far from achieving the level of care provided here. Would recommend this hospital to anybody.

Thank you very much for your comments and I was very glad to hear that you were so reassured about the care that we offered overall. However, I was very sorry to hear that one of our members of staff on CICU showed a lack of compassion at such a difficult time and I have asked the ward sister to talk to the individual concerned. We have now replaced our drinks machine (which was broken earlier in the year) and we have reminded the teams that blankets are available for relatives overnight, if needed. Unfortunately we cannot fit any other chairs into the visitor's room, otherwise we would address this issue too.
