"My 16 year old son now has no nipples"

About: Leicester Royal Infirmary

Anything else?

My son had suffered abuse for most of his life due to enlarged breast tissue. Finally last year this was recognised as a medical problem and Leicester Royal agreed to operate. A very painful and humiliating experience for a lad who is extremelly fit and bordering on a professional sporting career. They sent him home with drains still intact. However, 5 months later my son has no nipples and we have now been told by the consultant this is normal and that they will never return. If, at the time of deciding whether to have this very painful surgery, we would have been informed of the outcome I can def say we would not have given consent.

Please get back in touch with us. Some patients who undergo surgery where the loss of a nipple or both nipples is a risk may be eligible to have a treatment to cosmetically replace the nipple. This involves a procedure not dissimilar to tattooing but enables patients to feel confident about their appearance.

This is a treatment available on the NHS and usually requires several attendances to complete. For more information please contact Matt Pilley or Claire Porter by calling the LRI switchboard on 0300 303 1573.

Alternatively you could approach your GP to refer you to see Mr Sanjay Varma, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, for a consultation about nipple tattooing.
