"Traumatic birth made a lot worse by Airedale Hospital maternity service (1st baby)"

About: Airedale General Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

Went into labour at home, waters broken so went to the delivery suite to be assessed after being put on a machine for monitoring for 30 mins I was send home and advised I needed to rest at home and that I was unlikely to give birth for another 12-24 hours. I was shocked as waters had broke and contractions were 5 mins apart.

I got home obviously in terrible pain and after only being home for 1 hour then gave birth without any paramedics or midwife support just the father to do the work of the NHS.

I then went via ambulance back to Airedale for assessment as did our beautiful new son and we were quickly moved into a private room on ward 21. This is where things went from bad to worse.

We called the buzzer numerous times only for midwifes to come 20 mins later. We started timing it after they never came in any urgency. Then the proud father went to complain at the desk, to be informed they didn't know anyone was in room 3 and that they didn't have anyone assigned to my room and thats why we hadn't seen anyone all afternoon.

We then asked to be discharged, as were not getting anything from being there and it took them 4 hours to get the paperwork sorted. It was basically a traumatic experience of the nhs from start to finish. I would not recommend airedale on all counts. I will go as far to say I think that the parts we experienced are at breaking point and unsafe.

Look at ways of improving patient experience and make sure patients and the public are fully engaged in all the work of the hospital.

We are sorry that you and your partner had such an unsatisfactory experience when you accessed the maternity services recently.

The Matron would have welcomed the opportunity to discuss your concerns at the time and would like to apologise that you had a poor experience. We are more than happy to discuss the midwifery issues that you have highlighted in person and would welcome contact from you.
