Anything else?

It's 3 months now since my father passed away on the Stroke ward. Looking at the remarks on the stroke unit back in December 2010, it seem that the treatment on this unit does not appear to have changed. Dad was transferred from Frenchy and on the first visit to Southmead, the family were upset to find him very distressed, no conven, pad or pants. Sheets saturated, urine dripped onto floor and dad soiled. Had been left for long period like this as urnine on floor top and bottom sheet saturated. Not a good start to his treatment on the unit. Unfortunately this was only the start of a series of unnecessary distress suffered by both dad and the family. We had to constantly check charts and keep requesting for help, to get any answers to help relieve dad’s discomfort. On one occasion it took 6 days to get an xray result back. Do we think our dad was treated with dignity and given the very best of care, no.

Response from Southmead Hospital

Dear Anonymous – Please accept my sincere sympathy for your sad loss. I am sorry that your experience of the stroke wards was so poor. Occasionally due to circumstances it is not always possible to maintain the conditions on wards we aspire to, or expect. Clearly the situation you describe is not what we would wish for any of our patients or relatives and I would be happy to undertake a detailed investigation of the events in order that we can learn from the situation and implement any identified changes that might be required to improve patient’s experiences. If you would like to accept this offer please contact me via Complaints@nbt.nhs.uk with your fathers date of birth and address, or his hospital number.

Kind regards – Steve Sykes
