"Very happy."

About: Watford General Hospital

What I liked

My partner was taken into A&E on New Years Day. Despite the long wait in A&E reception, which isnt their fault, and due to lack of staff/resources, I was so grateful to everyone for the care he received. From the reception staff, to cleaners, I found everyone to be exceptionally helpful, friendly, cheerful (even though they were working awful hours on New Year's Day !) and they could not do enough to help. Everyone was so lovely. He was treated with respect and looked after so well. Our minds were put at rest with the whole attitude of the hospital staff, so thank you.

What could be improved

Nothing.

Anything else?

I would make a comment about the car parking. It is excessively expensive, and does not need to be, due to the amount of visitors it receives. I only had £3 in my purse as I had to leave the house in a rush (to go with the ambulance) and the minimum you could put in the machine was £4. Luckily a kind visitor was just going and gave me his ticket to use for the remaining time left. Also the signage about where to park is not very good, and at the moment, the car park is like a building site.

We’re delighted to hear you had such a positive experience in the A&E Department. Please be assured that your comments have been passed onto the team involved in your visit to Watford General, and were gratefully received. In addition, your points on signage has been passed on too.

On the issue of car parking, as a hospital Trust we have to make difficult decisions regarding how and on what we spend our constrained resources. For the last financial year our accounts show that the car parking facilities across our sites – which incidentally fall within a heavily populated area that does not offer significant public parking - cost nearly £1m to provide, including maintenance and security. The Trust gets no funding for this service, so we either cover the cost from patient services or charge those using our car parks.

We do offer significant concessions for patients and visitors who park at the site frequently (details of which are widely available throughout all our hospitals and on our website www.westhertfordshirehospitalsnhs.uk ), or who fall into specific eligibility criteria.

Nevertheless, as you may not have fallen into this criteria on this unfortunate occasion, we apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused.
