"An excellent service and building is being spoiled..."

About: Royal Blackburn Hospital

What I liked

All the treatment received by my husband(the patient) and myself was excellent. Information given to us was relevant and correct. The Surgical Triage unit was brilliant and the staff were very helpful and kind. treatment was required every day over the Christmas period as an outpatient following an urgent surgical procedure on the Friday before Christmas.

What could be improved

The address was not changed or checked on admission. The letter from the GP showed the correct address, but the discharge summary showed the old address.

The medication provided by the hospital had the wrong name on the labels. No one had checked it and we did not notice until we got home. The medication was correct however, but the instructions on the discharge summary did not agree with the instructions given on the pharmacy label. Attention to detail was missing.

Anything else?

Thank you for all you did for us.

We were very happy with the ward but the experience of entering the hospital was awful. It was disgusting to see all the cigarette ends, dirty cups, litter, and half dressed patients with drips around the entrance smoking. The smoke was being pulled into the entrance by the revolving doors.

All this is going on under and near a notice which states that there must be no smoking in the Hospital or grounds !

The worrying thing is the Infection Control standards and Health and Safety standards must be being contravened.

Thankyou for your feedback about your experience at Royal Blackburn Hospital, which will be passed on to the relevant departments and staff. If you would like us to look in more detail at any of the issues raised we would appreciate it if you could contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0800 5872586 or by email PALS@elht.nhs.uk. The issue of smoking around hospital entrances was recently raised at a Trust board meeting and further steps will be taken to try to alleviate the problem. Thanks again for your comments.
