"Great care and expertise staff tried their best in..."

About: Leicester General Hospital

What I liked

The attitude of all the staff I came in contact with, from the consultant to the cleaner was very caring, they all gave the impression that they cared about their work, the patients and the environment. The medical care from the staff that treated me was excellent. The nursing staff made great efforts to ensure that I was pain free and comfortable. The wards (1 and 19) where clean and warm and my dignity, even though I had a urological condition, was respected at all times.

What could be improved

On admittance to ward 1 I was shown to a bed at 7:30am; I eventually had my operation at 4.45pm. All that time there was no television or radio available and no material to read. I was transferred to ward 19 after my operation, an old fashioned nightingale ward with 24 beds, 2 toilet / shower rooms and 2 toilets. The ward regime was a little antiquated, lights out at 10:30pm and on again at 6:00am. Breakfast was served in the ward out of bed if possible or you were allowed to fetch from the service hatch? if mobile. The only television was in a day room but not working. The nurses station was based at the end of the ward but you could hear everything that was happening, telephones, printers talking etc. Discharge from the ward was I thought a little precarious patients including myself where allowed to leave the ward even though mobility was restricted. I overheard one patients relative asking the nurse what would happen if the discharging patient was to fall before reaching the exit, the nurse eventually rang for a porter and a wheelchair, something that seems common place in other hospitals.

Anything else?

On reflection if you have to be admitted to hospital at all then the Leicester General was a good place to be. The staff where great and I would recommend this hospital to anyone who needs specialist urological surgery.

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback about your recent stay at our hospital. It was nice to hear that you were pleased about the care you received from our staff.

Your comments will be shared with the team, particularly those around the lack of entertainment on wards 1 and 19.

We would like to wish you all the best for the future.
