"my son nearly died and as for myself, i am still..."

About: Watford General Hospital

What I liked

in july 2010 I gave birth to my son with insufficiant pain relief, I had a epidural in situ but was not allowed it topped up. I was allowed to tear, third degree. I was left dirty and still in pain for 30 minutes before going to theatre to be repaired. over night I was not given any food or drink even though requested. I was haemorraging through the night yet had no monitoring let alone saw a nurse. no explainations about tear damage even though asked numerous times. in sept 2011 my son was very ill, after three days with no fluid chart till requested, drugs given though no identity band, observations done anywhere between two to six hourly they wanted to send him home. he was in extreme pain, peaking tempretures, vomiting and had extremly high inflammation levels in his blood tests yet they thought he had colic, teething to name a few, eventually a viral infection. my mother and I demanded a scan that reveiled a blocked kidney and kidney stones. my son was transferred and had emergency surgery the next day, three operations in all and very close to needing specialised care.

What could be improved

knowlege by being able to see a sick child and treat them effectively

Anything else?

I am still very angry and upset about my care. i may as well have been in a undeveloped country. I have had further problems and surgery. to know my son nearly died had it not have been due to my medical knowledge, mothers intuition is heartbreaking and shocking.

You’re clearly very unhappy about the experience you’ve had at Watford. We would appreciate investigating this in detail, so we can look into what went wrong for you and why. Apart from giving you some answers, if would also help put things right if we can.

If you could get in touch with us by email (info@whht.nhs.uk), we will provide you with a detailed response on each of the issues raised.
