"My faith in the NHS is restorred!"

About: Bedford Hospital South Wing

What I liked

Admitted as an emergency I spent the first night on the AAU, comments below. The ambulance crew first rate, professional and caring.

On admission to AAU put on a trolley, IV access and fluids commenced, bloods taken, ECG and Xray undertaken very efficiently. Seen by Doctors and treatment regime planned.

Moved to Harper Ward following morning, exceptionally professional, friendly appraochable and efficient staff. The ward was well run. I could not fault my care. My faith in the NHS was restored. The whole team on this ward are a credit to the hospital. Medical staff very informative and approachable. Further investigations undertaken efficiently by Ultrasound and the endoscopy unit.

Thank you to the porters, radiographers and medical staff also.

A very unpleasant episode in my life made bearable by extremely caring staff. many thanks to all concerned.

What could be improved

AAU, was an exceptionally busy night, the following is an observation not a critiscism. They were overwhelmed with difficult patients, however, following my IV fluids being cited, i did not see another member of staff untill the morning. No observations undertaken and no checking on whether i was continuing to bleed (which i was). I stopped my own IV fluids when they ran through, but had I not been a health care professional the outlook may have had different consequences.

The night staff worked tirelessly, but if you were quiet you did not receive any attention, which could have proven harmful in some circumstances. The student nurse and the health care assistants were wonderful and worked hard always with humour, professionlism and empathy.

Anything else?

If every department worked as well as the staff on Harper ward, the hospital would be "Outstanding 5*"

I assist the Communicatiosn & Marketing department in producing leaflets, maintaining our public presence and co-ordinating press releases, as well as liaising with PALS for patient enquiries.

Dear Mrs Simpson,

Thank you for taking the time to write down your experiences and feedback from your stay at Bedford Hospital.

I have passed your comments onto the staff on Harpur Ward, as well as the Porters, X-Ray Department, Endoscopy and Ultrasound unit.

I would also like to take this opportunity to personally thank you for your kind comments.

I am sorry to hear of the problems that you faced on the Acute Assessment Ward (AAU). As I am sure you understand, AAU is a ward that experiences high traffic flow due to the nature of the ward. I have passed these comments onto our PALS team for investigation, however would like to encourage you to contact the PALS team directly via the information available at http://www.bedfordhospital.nhs.uk/patients/pals-and-complaints to help aid the investigation further.

Thank you once again for sharing your experience at Bedford Hospital.
