my son suffers schizophrenia and needed help due to deteriorating mental state so he rang the duty number (again) and was told that because of the economic climate etc and the fact he had been seen only that week, they could offer no help! he even mentioned the fact that he was suicidal but was told his crisis keeps spilling into out of hours and should be contained. My son then stated (in my presence) "would it be better if i were dead" and was told words to the effect of sorry and bye. This is meant to be an emergency out of hours service yet I feel that there is no service at all. this isnt just a one off, he is told to ring his care coordinator on monday each time he has had to call.
His care coordinator and psychiatrist are extremely helpful, the doctor even putting it onto the system that when he calls he NEEDS to be assessed! this never happens of course. I am very disappointed in the mental health service at present and feel my son has been let down dreadfully, god forbid he should take his own life because i really wouldnt know what to do let alone who to contact.
