"Very bad experience - so disappointed and sad for..."

About: Darent Valley Hospital

What I liked

nothing except the building - the staff have to understand 1/ they are lucky to have a job 2/ speed and urgency 3/ knowledge and training 4/ if they dont like it find another job - yes its hard and demanding.

What could be improved

To be seen and assessed on arrival and told what was happening - to check for broken/factured bones and why continued stomach pains - bladder - stone - rupture - ??? To be given strong pain killers and to be informed - offered drinks or IV - Better quality of staff who can work fast and hard under pressure for their shift then rest and then do the same again while they are employed - its not a holiday camp or a place to chat about your love life or vacations. Its a very hard job with massive responsibilies and I respect them if they take their work seriously. Keep patients and relatives informed at all times and be happy, kind and respectful.

Anything else?

I had just posted a comment Very good experience - well done ! as my mother had been admitted 20 Nov and on 21 Nov she was discharged and I was told everything was good and they had made a referral and suggestion back to her GP - I was over the moon so happy - I thought the staff were angels and miracle workers - I had collected my mother and bought gifts for all the staff - however as soon as I saw her I knew she wasnt right and after pushing her in our wheelchair to the car she couldnt get in she couldnt stand, eat, drink, swallow and hardly talk - on Tuesday I had to call the doctor in who was astounded that the hospital didnt address and act on the problems he didnt even have a copy of the release report and took mine - he prescribed

meds for the stomach pain but I could get her to swallow it - the DS was called on Wednesday and on Thursday she fell in the bathroom under totally exhaustion and dehydration - with blood everyone and maybe broken bones a 999 call was made - we arrived back at Darent Valley to a completely different experience this was now midnight weekend - dont ever get ill at the weekend its bad news - we waiting 5 hours with no attention - I asked where was we in the Q and told 8 more before us - so maybe another 6 hours wait - I begged for some pain killers and after 1 hour they did give her a liquid pain killer - I left her unseen as I had to sleep - back the next day and still in the same area until 10pm ..... then transferred to Spruce Ward and as of last night , Sun, no progress and infact she was getting worse - did see the only weekend doctor who was very pleasant but come on this is an emergency hospital which other industry has every weekend off - how can you slow down to almost closed a hospital ?? so hopefully today something good will happen - we stayed feed 5 mouthfuls - got her to drink a little begged again for pain killers and got them and in 4 hours perked her up a little.

Dear Mr Sheffield,

Thank you for these comments, which we spoke about on the phone. I am very sorry indeed that we did not provide such good service as you experienced earlier. I understand that the Matron for A&E has spoken to you and the ward sister on Spruce ward has also been in touch. I do hope that care improved as a result.

With best wishes,

Jenny Kay

Director of Nursing
