"All in all a fantastic service from Newham..."

About: Newham General Hospital

What I liked

My grandfather died on Saturday evening. Due to our religion and grandfather’s wishes, we needed to conduct the funeral as soon as possible which was the next day, Sunday. As it was the weekend, we were very apprehensive that this would not happen, so we prayed and hoped. We contacted the nurse, who in turn contacted the Site Manager. They were very helpful and explained the procedure. They then contacted the Chaplain/Imam with our permission the same evening, Saturday. They were so helpful and arranged everything. As there was no Dr. available to write the death certificate, the Imam contacted the Consultant of that area who was not working over the weekend. The Consultant was so kind, came in and did the death certificate in the evening, on the Saturday out of their own time. Not seen many Consultants do things for free out of their own time.

Then the Imam came the next morning, sorted out other paperwork with the Newham on-call Register Office (Thank you Newham Council for this out of hours service) and released my grandfather to the undertaker on Sunday morning. We were able to conduct the funeral according to my grandfather’s wishes and the family’s wishes later that afternoon, on the Sunday. All in all a fantastic service from Newham hospital and although the passing away of my grandfather is sad, we are so relieved and comforted that the funeral happened according to our and most importantly, grandad’s wishes!

Thank you Newham Hospital, excellent personal care.

What could be improved

On the Friday before Saturday when my grandad passed away, My aunt and my wife who were with my grandad from 12.00 midday requested to change his pad as the bed was wet, my wife requested the nurses twice that day but they did not get him changed. when I came in from 21.00 my wife explained the issue to me that he has not being changed since 12.00 midday, I changed him myself . This is the only issue that has hurt me.
