"A life experience enhanced by the support, care..."

About: Russells Hall Hospital

What I liked

The whole service delivery from scans, tests, community midwives to midwives at hospital was excellent! I was well supported and made informed decisions throughout. I was concerned from rumour that midwives would not receive some of my decisions well but this was nonsense they were good friends to me and the whole journey has been enhanced by them!

What could be improved

More facilities for delivery options. Unfortunately for me the birthing pool was in use which I would have used. I think the location of the maternity unit on the second floor of the hospital is rather bizarre? Was it a man that designed this unit? What woman in the closing stages of labour wants to walk this far? I appreciate there is a lift but arguably not the best design.

Anything else?

Midwives historically have come under scrutiny as harsh and strong minded individuals forcing the breast is best issue upon women. This is not the case and in fact it was refreshing to learn that the midwives in Dudl;ey are good friends to women and provide excellent support and care throughout pregnancy, labour and birth. I was most impressed and appreciative particularly to my community midwives. Keep up the good work!

Response from Russells Hall Hospital

Thank you so much for your positive feedback about our maternity department. Our midwives and diagnostic staff will be delighted to hear they made you feel so informed and involved in your pregnancy and the birth of your child. We will be very pleased to pass on your comments to the midwifery team.

You raise an interesting question about the sex of the designer of the maternity unit. It wasn’t a man but a team of men! On a serious note, the design team put the unit at that end of the hospital to form a separate maternity block, which can be locked for the security of new born babies. It also has its own entrance on the ground floor which only mums-to-be can access out of hours.
