"My sister's terrible on going experiences with mental health care in South London "

About: Inpatient mental health care (Southwark)

(as a relative),

My sister suffered serious injuries many years ago due to a lack of care in the Maudsley. This was twenty years ago but my family have been to hell and back.

She was in a care home for the last couple of years in Lewisham but as far as I'm aware she spent most of the time sitting in a room all day or in the garden smoking. She was very unhappy there and it made her very ill.

Again, she was put in Lewisham hospital mental health unit, my mother was at her wits end, it seemed to us that no one really wanted to help and next thing we know she been put back in the Maudsley without us being contacted. It felt to us like Lewisham wanted to wash their hands of her due to her many issues and disability. As you can imagine after what happened there, we felt this was unacceptable.

My mother has been broken down herself by all this and really dosent know who to trust or where to turn any more after endless meetings to try a find my sister a new home that's suitable. It feels to us that no one really wants to take responsibilty .

Response from Patrick Gillespie, Service Director, Psychosis Clinical Academic Group, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust

Dear mattyp,

Thank you for taking the time to express your concerns about the care and treatment of yoursister. I am really sorry that they have had a poor experience within our service and we are concerned about the issues that you have raised.

We would add that the circumstances for your family member appear complex and this is in no way trying to diminish our responsibilities in relation to her care, but it does mean that communication with you and all the other agencies involved is really important. So it would be helpful if we can start to talk about issues there have been and how we can move forward.

In order that we can address these important issues we would like to meet with you and I would be grateful if you could either contact me on the following number: 0203 228 6590 or via email: Patrick.Gillespie@slam.nhs.uk

I look forward to hearing from you.
