"Sheridan Ward staff have been amazing to my daughter"

About: Hollins Park / Sheridan Ward

(as a relative),

My daughter was discharged from Sheridan ward yesterday after being a patient there for almost 6 weeks. During her time there, the staff have been absolutely amazing and I cannot fault any of them. They were always there for my daughter when she was feeling agitated or very low and managed to make time for her even during their busiest periods. They supported and helped guide her through one of the most difficult and lowest points of her life, keeping her safe and cared for throughout.

Always professional, the staff always had time to speak with me too, answering my many queries and concerns, in a clear, sensitive and confidential manner, whatever the time of day, as it was an extremely distressing time for me, and all the family. Their patience through my own distress was wonderful.

Sheridan ward was different to other wards I have previously experienced, particularly as they encourage patients to get as fully involved as possible in their own care plan, enabling them to set their own goals along the way. This person-centred approach is vital in facilitating a quicker and more stable recovery, and empowers the individual to develop a deeper sense of personal responsibility.

The consultant's approach too was excellent, as in my opinion many can be authoritarian or dismissive. And this particular consultant did not tell my daughter what she 'should' or 'should not' be doing, nor did she place the emphasis or power on the medications. Rather, the focus stayed completely on my daughter and what she felt she wanted or needed.

My daughter worked through a lot of painful issues during her hospital stay, which she could not have done without the support of the staff. As a result, she has learned a lot about herself. For example how to identify triggers to low moods, being open and honest about thoughts and feelings, alternative coping and self-soothing strategies, and most importantly, because she was listened to and never judged, she has learned ask for help when she needs to.

It has been an overall very positive experience on Sheridan ward and I would just like to thanks all the staff for their hard work, patience and understanding. It is all very much appreciated. You do a fantastic job!
