"Wanting to come off Methodone and have a life"

About: Turning Point Substance Misuse Services

(as a service user),

I have been with Turning Point drug services in South Kirkby and on a Methodone prescription for 8 years. I desperately want to come off and be drug free.

When I tell them that I want to be 'drug free' they look at me like I am swearing at them. It is not working for me at all, I want to be off drugs and I want to get on with my life.

In my opinion I have asked about alternative options, I have said I want to be off Methodone, I have asked them to reduce me but nothing changes. I am on the legal maximum, which I feel is ridiculous. I feel as if I've got no life.

I am told I have no other options, that being on Methodone is all I can do. When I get frustrated they perceive me as aggressive and just tell me to keep calm.

I was clean for 7 and a half years and relapsed recently. I honestly believe that had the service listened to me me and helped me I wouldn't have relapsed.

I want to Detox, but they won't let me. I think they just want to keep people on their books. I am no severley frustrated, and am losing my patience.

Am I not entitled to support and care to get off drugs and live a better life?

I am concerned to hear that you feel you have had a negative experience when requesting progress in your recovery plan. Within the service we actively seek to promote recovery through detox and where appropriate by prescribing interventions including Methadone. Such recovery plans consider the clinical safety and a variety of other factors in determining a suitable course of treatment for any individual person and therefore it’s impossible to comment without more information.

As a service we take promoting recovery very seriously and recently delivered a Recovery Week across the district to help promote awareness within the service user community of the opportunities to make progress in treatment. In South Kirkby just as nationally, the substance misuse treatment agenda has changed over the years and we’re focused on developing the interventions that help people move through to the treatment outcomes that they are aiming for.

I’m keen that you feel able to review your treatment with your worker and would ask that you speak to your worker to arrange a review. If you don’t feel able to do this but would like to discuss your concerns further you can raise these with the Senior Team Leader Bev Rankine who can be contacted via your service. It is only by listening to individual views that we can make progress in developing better services as a whole.

Thank you for posting your views and if you would like to make more of a contribution, you would be welcome to attend/become a member of the district service user forum.
