"Frustrating, unprofessional, unclean enviroment..."

About: John Radcliffe Hospital

What I liked

I was recently left with a severely broken arm following a vicious attack by a gang on a night out in Bicester town. I was taken to the John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford on the same night and from my arrival was very unhappy with how I was treated. My first complaint was at how little comumunication there was between patient and nurse/doctor. My boyfriend was also injured in the attack, he was left with concusion - he was X-rayed but never given his results. He only discovered the results as he overheard two doctors discussing them. I was also seen by a very unprofessional nurse who had trouble with injecting and trouble figuring out how to put a sling on - it took her about 20 minutes, in which she seemed to completely have forgotten my arm was broken and threw it about like a rag, ignoring the fact I was wincing in pain. I was then told that I was to be discharged, and should return in two days to be admitted for surgery. I was given an appointment card and sent home with my severely broken arm protected by a split cast, thinking I'd be back in shortly. No such luck. I returned in the saturday and was told that there were no free beds, even though I was given the impression they had a bed ready for me. There were a couple of people infront of me on the waiting list and 'it shouldn't be more than a few days' so again, I was sent home. It has now been a week and three days since my arm was broken. I have phoned the hospital daily, only to be shrugged off with 'you're the next on the list' 'there are discharges today' and 'you'll be in tomorrow' each day, amongst other excuses. I understand that emergency appointments take priority - but my case was classed as an emergency a week ago. I am now left waiting in the dark, feeling very low, angry and in severe pain. My temporary cast is now dirty and due to my swelling going down it is also far too big. I am disgusted at the way I have been treated by this hospital.

What could be improved

Everything, basically.
