"Confusing maternity visiting hours"

About: Leicester General Hospital / Maternity

(as a relative),

When we arrived my wife's parents and my son (the father) were with our daughter-in-law and new granddaughter. Her mother and sister had visited earlier but had left.

At first we were not allowed into the ward because 4 people had already visited, even though 2 of them had left before we arrived.

After some complaining we were allowed in, but for a few minutes only.

How are visitiors supposed to know how many people have been there before them? Are we supposed to contact anyone who might visit, to ensure that no more than 4 actually go?

The hospital website states only that no more than 2 visitors are allowed at the bedside at one time, not that there is a limit on the total numbers allowed in either a visiting period or a day. The notices posted in the ward are contradictory.

We are not mind-readers. The policy should be made clear and be consistent.
