What I liked
The Nurse who stitched my finger up was friendly if new and inexperienced.
What could be improved
I cut my finger almost in half and caught a taxi to the hostpital for stitches. I had taped the wound shut and had stemmed the bleeding.
The receptionist was tired bored, and had zero empathy.
The triage nurse opened up my wounded finger and re-wrapped it in a open position stopping the limited blood flow I still had to the end of my finger.
I then waited for 6 hours. With no pain relief dripping blood onto the A&E floor.
Finally I was sent to the only working Dr. He unfortunately spoke limited english and his first action was to unwrap my wound and then deliberately squeeze it hard causing the blood to pour all over the floor again afresh. I sternly advised the Dr that he had just opened up my cut again and that it rather hurt. He replied "Its to stop the bleeding. Pressure helps"
Yes the pressure was very useful 6 hours previously when I had been squirting blood over my kitchen floor it was less useful after the wound had been clotting for 6 hours. He then actually did some useful checks by making me move it in differing directions to see if the tendons were damaged. This was not the case luckily. (He never mentioned nerve damage) he then "tried" to wrap up my wound with the same hasily wrapped and recently torn off blood soaked bandages.
We were usherred to a room. We were then promptly forgotten about. I looked for someone after waiting for 40 minutes and complained, a nurse promised to be in shortly. half an hour later I was stitched up. it took two minutes. He left and we were told someone would be in to clean my hand up. we waited another 40 minutes. I cleaned my own hand up and left.
There was no communication between departments or staff. And although my hand was caused to bleed again I had to insist the Dr re-bandaged my wound rather than simply close up the tattered rags that were full of 6 hour old clotted blood. I was given no feedback on my wound, no re-assuring infomration was given. "don't worry neverves to exremities grow back in time you will regain the feeling" would have been lovely to hear rather than me having to find it out via google the next day after worrying all night with a dead feeling finger. (a year later most feeling has returned)
