What I liked

I was treated at A&E for a complicated fracture of my right wrist. They were very good with me and I was then admitted into hospital in preparation for the surgery that was needed. I spent 2 nights ( Sat & Sun) in hospital but unfortunately I needed a specialist surgeon who was not available until Wednesday so I went home until then. The care on the ward was very good, although there was a very long wait for my medication before I could go home on the Monday.

I returned on Wdenesday and had my surgery as a Day Case, again my care was very good.

I returned for a check up after 2 weeks and became distressed as the operation I had was not as I thought, I believed that I had K Wires fitted but it had infact been plated. The surgeon told me that I had obviously still been under the influence of my anaesthesia when she saw me post surgery to check on me and that she had never told me that wires had been used. At that visit I was referred to the OT department for physio on my wrist.

I began working with the OT team, who are fantastic by the way, I worked extremely hard and was encouraged and praised along the way, I exercised almost hourly whilst recovering at home through a lot of pain and discomfort.

I returned to the fracture clinic for another check up to be seen by a different doctor. His attitude was very poor and he left me demorolised. He asked me to do 2 movements with my wrist and was not happy that I could not do them. He basically told me that I hadn't been trying hard enough! If it had been him he would have been back at work after 6 weeks, which made me feel even worse! I work full time as a carer and was not used to having time off.

I left the clinic in tears.

I am still under the care of the OT department and will be for some time. Apart from the lack of people skills displayed by that doctor I have been well cared for.

What could be improved

The lack of compassion from the doctor and an improvement in his communication skills.
