I was starved on a daily basis for seven days prior to surgery on my broken ankle.
I was allowed to eat & drink from about 10pm (when theatres had closed) to midnight (start of new starvation day).
I developed kidney stones which I think were due to low fluid intake.
Moral: make sure you get intravenous fluids when on 'nil by mouth' - they need to put a drip line in you anyway for theatre.
How about this for patient-led 'joined up thinking'?
