"Absolutely appalling"

About: Lings Bar Hospital

Anything else?

We would not want any other member of our family or friends to be admitted to Lings Bar. Although the care staff work to their best ability the staff patient ratio is way too low. Medical decisions also seem questionable.

Rehabilitation seems to take the form of not letting patients do anything for themselves, litigation being the only reason the family can see for such attitudes.

The family were told in the middle of a busy corridor that dementia had been diagnosed. We were also told in the middle of a busy corridor by a nurse that a decision had been made that CPR would not be carried out on the patient should it become necessary, and that we could speak to the doctor regarding this if we wished.

The patient was left for 3 weeks clearly getting more distressed and ill before being moved back to a hospital, which eventually put into question the dementia diagnosis.

The patient’s dignity and basic expectations were not upheld whilst in the care of the medical staff at Lings Bar, something the person in question both earned and deserved.

I’m sorry to hear of your experience of Lings Bar Hospital at what was obviously a stressful time for you and the family. Thank you for taking the time to post your comments, we appreciate any feedback whether it be positive or negative as it gives us the chance to improve services.

I understand you felt the staff to patient ratio was too low during the time you were visiting Lings Bar. Naturally we want to be sure that there are enough staff to meet the needs of patients, and staffing levels are constantly under review to achieve this. We always aim to have a minimum number and mix of staff on shift at any one time, within national safety limits, and don’t routinely go below this. If you can give us more information, we can look further into it for you.

As part of their rehabilitation, all patients at Lings Bar are encouraged to be as independent as possible within the limits of their medical condition or safety. Where there is a risk of falling, or if the person is very confused, it may not be safe for them to do things independently at that time. Some patients need more support for longer than others, and there may be a period of observation to monitor the condition or response to treatment. Each person’s rehabilitation and treatment will be different, and will have a personal plan tailored to meet the needs of the individual. I’m sorry if this was not fully explained at the time, and will feed back your comments to staff.

We would expect patients and immediate family to be involved in decisions about care and treatment wherever possible, including discussion of issues such as diagnosis and resuscitation. I can only apologise that such discussions were had in a busy corridor. This isn’t acceptable, and should not happen in any circumstance. We would expect any discussion of this nature to be had in a private setting, and will raise this issue with staff to ensure it is not repeated.

Unfortunately we are unable to comment further on individual circumstances relating to your loved one’s care or treatment; however we are concerned about these comments and would like to know more about it. If you are still unhappy about care or treatment at Lings Bar, please contact Sara Jane Ashmore on 0115 883 7428.
