"Shocking care!"

About: Huddersfield Royal Infirmary

What I liked

Night Staff Amazing. Helped change bandages, Made sure I was clean made sure they helped me walk to the ladies as I was struggling.

Female surgeon was kind and caring and helped calm my nerves before I was put under.

What could be improved

Day staff - Couldn't careless, Didn't help when needed eventhough they weren't busy. Couldn't find time to show how to care for wounds after surgery. Didn't help change bandages didn't listen to my request to stay alittle longer until my dad come get me.

Anything else?

I was referred to Huddersfield by my GP for suspected appendicitis. I arrived at the hospital at 11am in which I was asked to move out of the waiting room so a consultant could use it. I sat in the corridor in agony. Finally at 12.30 I was seen by the first consultant who took blood and put the drip into my hand (I assumed I was been admitted but never actually told) About 2 hours later I was seen by another consultant who decided eventhough my blood did not suggest appendicitis they would operate as he could see I was in a lot of pain (I was still sat in the corridor) I asked for painkillers twice and finally recieved them. 4 other patients arrived in the meantime and all were shown to their beds before I was.

Finally settled into a room with 3 other charming ladies the surgeon came to see me and I was told I would be operated on that evening. Again I had to ask for more painkillers which I didnt get until I asked the new night shift staff (Who was amazing). At midnight (more than 12 hours after been admitted) I was taken to surgery. The night staff walked down with me and kept me calm as I was very nervous. After my surgery they continued to check on me and ensured I had my medication. At 8 am the consultant came again and said I could go home if I felt well but I could stay another night if I wished. I requested to stay another night due to the pain but by 11am I had my discharge letter and a car waiting to take me home to an empty house without any lunch or breakfast (I couldnt eat as still felt sick and pain) I wasnt told how to clean my wounds whether I could shower etc. It was a disgrace the day staff were busy chatting in the corridor!

Also all I knew was that it wasn't appendicitis. Surgeon did not tell me about the cyst on my ovary I discovered that on my discharge letter.
