The NHS hospital staff are my next of kins because they take interest in my welfare and aim to see me progress positively.
In june 1998, I had aa RTA head on collision and sustained a severe T5 spinal compression but I received a heaven sent treatment meeting all my needs and plans for moving with life.
I had an accident in 2009 October which worsened my mobility and independence but the NHS staff did not see me as a severe disabled person due to high dependence.
This year in February 2011, as in patient in Barts and the Royal London hospital, I received treatment and care that I never thought of would receive. The doctors, nurses and all staff attending me, were punctual, good listeners and showed an excellent duty of care.
Even my after care was planned and this made me to recover quickly and am already mobilising with less use of support.
Also the staff at Stanmore, spinal unit who are always monitoring my progress, are helpful. Before being transferred to them in 2006, I was always in tears and nearly lost hope for living but they encouraged me to take up further education, engage me with other people with similar challenges and discussing how they cope.
These situations which alter lifestyles are hard to understand from a self perspective and even my relations became strangers because the could not cope or understand what pain was I going through. As a patient from an African background and religious and cultural influences, an accident which alter one's life style is never accepted without finding a reason behind. But with the backing of Stanmore staff, I was able to trust, depend and listen to their advise and following instructions according to specialist advise and taking medication accordingly.
I would give the patient care and support service 200/90% because to me is more than perfect, they will become your friend, sister, mother, father, brother and everything that will make you look life on the positive side and plan ahead in the adversity times,
"T5 spinal compression, partial paralysed leg and shattered knee ligaments!"
