The midwives were kind and approachable, particularly the ones with me while I was giving birth

What could be improved

The midwives in the postnatal unit are too busy. They are clearly over stretched. More midwives needed. The room that I gave birth in was clean but the room I was in afterwards was dirty.

The quality of the doctors in the maternity unit I found to be very poor. I stayed in the hospital over night at around 26 weeks due to strong contractions. The first doctor I saw was helpful in terms of telling me what precautions they needed to take. The doctor I saw the next day when I was discharged didn't seem to know what he was doing and when I asked questions would avoid answering them as if he did not know the answers. On some occasions the midwife had to answer for him.

When I gave birth I had two midwives. One was a trainee. The midwives were excellent. When it came to the final pushing stage I was having difficulties. The midwives called for the doctor in plenty of time but were ignored. As the situation was becoming critical the midwives had to use an emergency alarm to get the doctors attention. When the doctor finally bothered to turn up she was cold and abrupt. Because so little time was left she proceeded to cut me with sissors without any anaesthetic, this then developed into a third degree tear through to my muscles. After going through labour with just gas and air I had to have an epidural for my stitches. My stitches were carried out by a surgeon in theatre. The doctor did not provide an explanation to my birthing partners as to what was going, did not apologise afterwards for her delay in arriving or the fact that because of the delay she had to cut me without aneasthetic. She was in an out and basically treated me like a piece of meat. The doctor absolutely ruined what would have been an extremely positive birthing experience because of her sheer lack of care and social skills.
