What I liked
My 71 year old mother got a fishbone stuck in her throat and so I drove her to the A&E at Wonford. We arrived there at about 3.15 pm and were told by reception to take a seat in the waiting room. After 20 minutes my Mother was called into a consulting room by one the Triage nurses. After a short interview she was told to retake a seat in the waiting area and that she would be called for an x-ray of her throat. When we first arrived at the unit there were probably about 15 people in the waiting room. About 30 minutes after we arrived a girl in a wheelchair was called away for an x-ray. The waiting room began to fill up and it appeared that a couple of the Triage nurse went off duty. The single nurse left worked steadily and it appeared that nearly all the people around us were waiting for an x-ray. After the girl mentioned above was wheeled away no further patients were called for an x-ray and the number of people in the room grew to between 30-40. There were a number of notices around the waiting room stating that all patients would be dealt with on a priority basis. My Mother said that if this was the case she would probably be at the bottom of the list and we would still be sitting there at 11pm! There was no communication with patients sittiing in the waiting room whatsoever as to how long they would have to wait. After 2 hours with no movement we left. Another couple who were waiting for an x-ray also left at the same time.
What could be improved
Communication with the patients in the waiting room!
