"Tameside Hospital Miscarriage"

About: Tameside General Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I went to A&E due to slight bleeding (9 week 4 days pregnant) last Thursday and all they did really was take my blood to check hormone levels. They made me an appointment for a scan at the EPU for the Monday. I believed everything would be ok, I still felt pregnant, the bleeding had stopped over the weekend and I felt positive about my bloods coming back fine.

On the Monday morning I arrived at the EPU for a scan and was shocked to hear the the babys heart was not beating (especially because I had a scan at 6 weeks and 3 days and there was a strong heart beat) my baby had died inside me. Doreen Travis the nurse at the EPU was amazing, she was really empathic she knew the right thing to say and I felt like I had someone on my side she is a credit to the hospital. You can tell when someone enjoys their job and they are also really good at it, she is definitely the best member of staff I have ever come across in the medical profession. Thank you Doreen.

On the negative side, it was an ordeal waiting 4 days to be told the baby's heart had stopped, why can't the A&E staff do a scan there and then? Surely this would make sense rather than giving false hope with blood tests.

The second negative was being bumped whilst waiting for a D&C. This prolonged my mental agony, I wanted to move on and grieve yet I waited from 11 AM until 4:40 PM just to get a bed and then didn't even get to have the operation until the following evening. I fully understand that emergencies arise but surely these should be kept separate to day cases, its seems the cuts are having such a negative effect on the hospital although you can't fault the staff, They do not deserve the cuts, they work hard.

Thank you so much for e-mailing your kind words. Please accept my sincere condolences at this tragic time. I do apologise for the wait you had to endure but scan slots are very few and far between due to a national shortage of sonographers.

I will ensure that all staff on the EPAU who were involved in your care and in particular Doreen Travis get a copy of your letter.

All the staff at Tameside endeavour to give the very best service to women and their families they possibly can at all times, and it is a pleasure to receive welcomed comments such as yours. It is all too often that Tameside Hospital is put into the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
