"Surgery that went wrong at Monklands Hospital."

About: The James Cook University Hospital / Plastic surgery University Hospital Monklands / Urology (Ward 6)

(as the patient),

I was admitted to the urology ward at Monklands Hospital for a suspected fracture to the penis. I was advised from the surgeon that surgery would be my best option so that they could "Explore" and hopefully find and sort the problem.

The surgery was carried out that evening and afterwards I was assured that it had been a success. The area where I had received treatment was bandaged which a nurse removed later that evening, it was at this point that I noticed that something didn't look right.

The following morning a doctor did his rounds (point to note this was a different doctor than the one who carried out the surgery) he said that after reading the notes I was able to be discharged. I asked the doctor to look at my foreskin which looked incredibly swollen. He had a quick look and assured me that it was nothing uncommon and would reduce in a couple of weeks. I was discharged shortly after this.

After roughly 5 days I noticed that most of the bruising was disappearing apart from the area around the forekin and a day or so after this some of the foreskin area started to go hard. I was worried that my skin was dying off so seeked medical advice from my own doctor. He quickly referred me to the James Cook Hospital who said that the swelling in the foreskin was from a blood clot and had killed off the skin cells and as such had started spreading.

In the end I had to have a complicated circumcision which involved me having to have skin took from my hip to replace the other skin that was cut away (roughly about 50%).

I strongly believe that if the doctors at Monklands Hospital had to have done a proper follow up they would have noticed this and possibly cured this before it spread as much as it did. I am left permantly deformed in that area and if it wasn't for the excellent treatment I received at James Cook Hospital, especially ward 5 and the plastic surgeon team, It could have been a lot worse.
