Further to my post of 6 months ago re: Schizophrenia and me and my sons experiences with Cumbria Mental Health Care. My Son was transferred to a rehabilitation unit In Darlington in January 2011 he now receives therapy and counselling and the staff and doctors there have been absolutely amazing. He has now reduced his medication considerably and the doctor has now taken him off his depot injection. He has improved 100% I see him every week and his understanding of his illness and his plans for a 'drug free' future are constant conversation pieces. How amazing that in six months he has turned his life around he still has a long way to go towards 'normality' and there is a chance that his schizophrenia may always be present but he accepts this, and so do I. I understand that National Health Services are cutting costs and have only a limited amount of funding for treatment out of area in specialist centres - BUT if my son had been offered counselling and rehabilitation four years ago how much money would that have saved the NHS? The Assertive Outreach Team in Carlisle have been absolutely brilliant - patient and understanding and I really thank them from the bottom of my heart (especially Sarah and Rick) without their due care and attention I dread to think where we would have been now. From our experiences, I think Cumbria really need to look at funding for a rehabilitation unit in Cumbria
