"I found the "buzz" I got from the gym replaced the "buzz" I got from alcohol"

About: Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust / Addiction services

(as the patient),

I became aware and worried about my increasing reliance upon alcohol and my GP referred me Rotherham Primary Care Alcohol Services.

Working closely with my key worker we examined my behaviors and together we created an action plan.

I was given some excellent reading materials and books that I could work through at my own pace. Through these I was enabled to build up a range of tools to help me deal with urges and cravings and cope with awkward situations involving alcohol which gradually reduced my intake.

The primary care trust also granted me a six week gym pass, this was an excellent opportunity for me to improve my fitness levels and to my amazement I found the "buzz" I got from attending the gym was replacing the "buzz" i got from drinking alcohol and this caused my cravings to diminish significantly. I believe the gym pass to be a great idea for patients such as me.

My key worker was very knowledgeable and recommended further reading materials to help me in the future.

I am delighted to say that my psychological health, physical health and quality of life have improved tenfold and I am looking forward to a "new life” abroad.

My sincere thanks go to Rotherham Primary Care Alcohol Services and in particular to my key worker for helping to guide me through those difficult months.
