"The Basement Recovery Project, Halifax, Calderdale"

About: The Basement Project

(as a service user),

After 25 years of drinking and not being able to stop and, in my opinion, turned down by one doctor who said stop or it will kill you and then referred to treatment services by another, where I was given the advice don't stop or it will kill you, I eventually found The Basement Recovery Project based in the YMCA in Halifax.

From the moment I walked through the doors, I was welcomed by friendly staff, staff who were just like me, staff who had been there, where I was, and staff who knew what was going on inside.

I attended their Recovery Programme and have not had a drink since.

Quite honestly, they saved my life. They were the last in line, without them, I literally had nowhere else to go, not even the gutter - as I was already there.

If you have a drink or drug problem, I would recommend getting in touch with The Basement Project.

'The Basement Recovery Project is really pleased to hear from people who are doing well in their recovery. Whilst we play a small part in a person's recovery journey and we do not expect thanks, it's still rewarding for our staff to hear about people from this medium.

It is good to have the Patient Opinion site to help inform others who may be nervous about attending services such as ours, as I feel it can be a way of reassurring people about what we do.'

Thank you for taking the time to give such positive feedback regarding your care and the support you received from the Basement Project.

Your comments are greatly appreciated and will be passed on to the workers in this area.

Anne,

I really just wanted to post a "thank you" following my experience and was just going to leave it at that. But as your comment comes AFTER that of the Basements Response, saying my comments will be passed on when in fact, they already were and already responded to, it just highlights to me how "on the ball" they are.

Two doctor's didn't seem to know what to do with me. I was in "Treatment" for two years before i found this organisation.

As Assistant Director of Involvement and Quality Improvement, I would ask that you do get involved and go to see them, and to learn from them - these people save lives, surely that is quality improvement for Calderdale?

You are correct that the Basement Project are very on the ball. Unfortunately I wasn't as quick off the mark to respond.

I should have been clearer when I said I would pass it on - what I meant was that I will pass it on to NHS colleagues who work in this area so that they can see what good work the Project is doing and how successful it is. This will hopefully make sure others in need of support are signposted to them so they can also benefit.

NHS Calderdale does have good links with the Project and members of my team have worked with them in the past around health issues and will hopefully continue to do so into the future.
