"Bournemouth Contraceptive Sevices"

About: Bournemouth and Poole Teaching PCT / Contraception and sexual health

(as the patient),

I came to the end of my second implant which I had fitted elsewhere. I had to wait 3 weeks for the first available appointment where I was advised that there may not be time to discuss other contraceptive methods. When I arrived, the nurse was shocked that I was considering not having another implant as at 25 I was planning to have a family in the next 3 years. She exclaimed "well you can't handle and unexpected preganancy can you?!" I felt very pressured into having another implant fitted and she laughed off my concerns as if they were ridiculous. I felt overwhelmed and not listened to. The doctor also put me under pressure to have another implant which was fitted there and then when my old one was removed. I had previously experienced arm pain with my first implant which was the removed and placed in the other arm within 48h. I had the same problem this time, with shooting arm pain on certain motions which woke me up at night. I left it a week to see if it would go away but when it didn't I called the sexual health services admin team who said they would inform the clinic I was coming in the following week. However when I arrived they were not expecting me. I waited an hour to see the same nurse who I found very domineering and patronising and uninterested in my problem. Furthermore, I was sitting my final exams and distressed at the interruption of my sleep etc. The doctor basically told me that due to cost she didn't want to remove it. When I emphasised just how painful my arm was and how it was affecting me she agreed that I could have it removed but at a later date. She gave me a contraceptive pill to start taking even though I did not request it. When I asked when and how I could go about having my implant removed she said I would just have to ring round to find an appointment. I told her that having already waited 3 weeks did she expect me to wait another 3 in pain for an available appointment? She said she was sorry I had to wait but there is nothing she could do. I left the clinic and cried. I felt incredibly helpless, let down and ultimately bullied. It appeared that they had every right to insist what I had put into my body especially if it saved the NHS money in expensive implants and god forbid, unexpected pregnancy.
