"An appalling hospital that I will never..."

About: St Mary's Hospital (Newport)

What I liked

The compassionate nurse who tried to help after my appalling appointment with the consultant.

What could be improved

Seeing a consultant who is more interested in his patient's welfare than his own ego.

Anything else?

I had the misfortune to meet a consultant who thought I should accept his shouting at me and general offensive behaviour. The fact that he stated it was his nature to behave that way implied that I, as a patient, should put up with his behaviour. Having agreed to perform minor surgery he then retracted his offer and then couldn't understand why I was upset and proceeded to shout even louder at me. I was left very distraught. The only saving grace for the hospital was the nurse who took me to a side room and tried to help. The fact that I was told it was his nature to behave this way left me believing that this consultant must treat women like this all the time. This is not just my view but that of my husband who witnessed the consultant's behaviour. Being rude and arrogant to patients is totally unacceptable. However, this is not my only complaint about the consultant. He also implied that an orthopaedic consultant that I had a seen a few weeks prior to him was "only a locum" and therefore, in my opinion, lead me to believe that the orthopaedic consultant had mis-diagnosed my problem.

With regards to PALS I did telephone and ask for the consultant's GMC number.

PALS are, in my opinion, nothing more than a management tool and therefore do very little to help improve patient experience.
