"like a consultation with a GP not a..."

About: The Royal Victoria Infirmary

What could be improved

They only have a short period of time between appointments and mine wasn't with the consultant. Something I'd liked to have known before booking.

I have tried numerous things over five years for my chronic scrotal skin problem, most treatments coming via an Internet forum for people sharing the problem. Posters there have said how interested their dermatologist was when being told of the forum: not so here.

I gave a list of various things I've tried but they had no new suggestions. And things which I forgot to put on the list, which have worked for people, they didn't mention.

I was prescribed steroid cream and told that if it doesn't work to go back to managing the problem as I have been (live with it). Despite being the only genital dermatosis clinic in the north east I got no impression of them having specialist expertise in dealing with chronic scrotal skin problems. This was like a consultation with a GP not a specialist.

Response from The Royal Victoria Infirmary

Thank you for your comment regarding the Genital Dermatology service at the RVI. I am sorry that you are not happy with the service you have received, as we strive to ensure the highest standards of care.. The service is Consultant-led and patients will be seen by the Consultant if this is required. The length of the consultation depends on the individual patient’s clinical need. Unfortunately, many skin conditions can only be managed, not cured. Thank you for taking the time to share your comments, which will be considered as we work to continue to improve the service.
