"Long Term Alcohol Addiction"

About: Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust / Addiction services

(as the patient),

After many years of alcohol misuse and several self help attempts to rid myself of my addiction I finally feel like I am getting somewhere with my problems after seeking help from services provided at my GP's practice.

Two years after being assigned and working with an alcohol support nurse I have in the past month achieved the longest period of abstinence from alcohol use in over 10 years.

We explored many ways to address the problem - always in a non pressure, friendly and encouraging atmosphere. Discussions were always structured in an informative, logical and constructive manner to enable maximum support without the negative reaction from me that could have resulted from me feeling "under pressure".

As I have learned, change can only come from within. This will only occur if you are really ready to change. This transition can be aided beyond measure with the correct support.

In conclusion, I have received the correct support and have begun to make changes - more importantly though - I now have the will that is needed to make those changes.

Dear 650902,

Thank you for sharing such an inspirational story.

Recovery is a journey that has to be at the pace of the person and I am pleased to hear that the support given was right for you. I can see from Patient Opinion that at least 21 others have read your story already, and I am sure it will help others on their journeys of recovery. I shall forward your message to the manager of the Substance Misuse Service who will share this story with all the staff involved.

I wish you well with your future,

Nick
