"Fertility treatment"

About: Plymouth Teaching PCT Sentinel Healthcare Southwest Community Interest Company

(as the patient),

After 18months of trying for a baby I was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome. My GP informed me I would need to be referred to a specialist and that in order to do so I would first need to have some tests.

Every time I was told I had had the required tests, more tests were added to the list, including tests for my husband.

My husband's work means he is around very little so trying to get his tests done was near impossible. After 3 months, I was eventually told my referral could be done so I waited. After hearing nothing for 2 months, I checked with my GP to find out the referral had never been sent.

They then sent the referral which was rejected because most of the tests had been done incorrectly, so I had to go through having the tests all over again.

In my opinion the only good service in all of this was Sentinel who contacted me within 48hrs and arranged me an appointment for the following day.

My GP told me I needed to reduce my stress levels but this whole thing has put them through the roof.

Dear Immense633

Thank you for posting your experience on Patient Opinion. We are sorry to hear about your recent experience and the delays to your appointment with regards to the tests required for your referral to hospital.

There is always a delicate balance with the need to undertake tests and the speed at which patients should be seen by a specialist. Often, completing the tests outside of the hospital setting will ensure patients have to attend the hospital on fewer occasions once they are referred.

The clinical pathway to which you were referred is scheduled to be reviewed by clinicians in general practice and at the hospital. One of the areas to be reviewed will be the number of tests needed and where these should be performed. We hope that this will improve the experience for future patients being referred to this clinic.

We will ensure we feed in your experience to this review. Once again thank you for your comments

Best wishes
