"Why why why does Sheffield insist on 0845 numbers for GP surgeries?"

About: Sheffield PCT

(as the patient),

Why why why does Sheffield insist on 0845 numbers for GP surgeries? I wouldn't think anyone will be phoning from outside the area but all of us who are not with BT or who only have mobile phones have to pay very heavily to call our doctor.

I think it should be stopped as it is in hundred’s of other towns and cities.

Hi Nile266,

We became aware of this issue some months before the deadline and were in touch with NHS Sheffield about it. We were told that they were working on this and that 084 numbers were not necessarily more expensive than a local call although some surgeries were charging more. Sheffield LINk was very disappointed to learn that many practices have still not changed their numbers.

Sheffield LINk is currently drafting a 'request for information' on this topic to send to NHS Sheffield. They are legally required to respond in writing to this within 20 working days and, while it may not yeild any new information, this will add to the pressure on them to sort this issue out.
