"Fantastic delivery suite. Awful..."

About: Lister Hospital

What I liked

Gave birth to my daughter at the Lister in February 2011. The new delivery suite was great. The midwifes on the delivery unit were fantastic throughout a very long and quite complicated labour. Always kept me and my partner updated. Could not have had a better birth experience. Thank you.

What could be improved

The postnatal ward I was transfered to after having my baby was awful. Transfered to the ward at midnight, was seen by staff, was awaiting a visit from the Pediatrician as my daughters birth was a little complicated, my partner was not allowed to wait for the doctor with us, but was virtually thrown out after 10 minutes. Not checked on again until about 9am. Ward was absolutely freezing, staff didn't seem to care about any patient. Made to feel uncomfortable. For a first time Mum, care was absolutely appalling. Expected to know exactly what I was doing, and talked down to when I asked questions relating to the care of my baby. Could constantly hear staff talking to each other all night, but they did not bother to come check all was okay when my baby was crying. In fact could not wait to get out of there, was amazed at the amount of staff just sitting behind the desk talking on my way out, not one of them bothered to say goodbye. Was absolutely the most distressing night of my life.

Anything else?

Would not recommend Lister purely because of the postnatal ward which is a great shame considering how fantastic the delivery suite and the midwifes on the unit are.

Clearly we are very disappointed by your experience of the Lister's postnatal ward - please rest assured that your feedback is noted and is in the process of being fed back to the team. While we can't undo that experience, we do know that things are changing. Before the end of this year, our complete new maternity service will be in place - which includes changes to the postnatal wards too. So our fantastic new delivery suite is just the first in a series of changes that will see us providing mothers and their babies with the best possible care.
