My friend has been in Heartlands Hospital for 12 days with serious gastro problems.
From what he has told us, and from what we have seen, and from what we hear daily from other patients in the bay, there seemes to be a major lack or resources, seriously poor level of care and some inept staff.
The surgeons are doing a great job but are seriously overworked or cannot be gotten hold of. The junior doctors don't seem to communicate to the nurses on the ward, the nurses on the ward are not allowed to call the doctors. The nurses get things wrong, and seem not to know what should or should not be happening with the patient. They are sometimes very pompous and rude if you ask them anything.
Worse than the lack of care in my friends' ward is the system that has been developed now. Between the HDU and general ward, I am surprised that he is still alive and fighting. He feels seriously afraid and having seen it for 6 days myself I am not surprised by his sentiment.
