I've been coming to Guernsey House for 2yrs now. I'm on Methodone, which is working for me and I want to reduce the amount but because I'm pregnant, I'll get to a stage where I have to up the amount because the baby will be taking it, and then I'll be able to reduce it again.

I want to be off drink completely, Guernsey will be able to help me do that. I've done it before so I can do it again. I don't want to be drinking when the baby comes.

I've only relapsed twice in the last 4yrs which I think is good. I feel like I'm getting more able to cope.

It's great to hear from someone in our pregnancy clinic and I'm really pleased that you are doing so well.

Just to explain for other people who may not be as well informed as you, some women do need to increase their doses of maintenance medication during pregnancy because of their increased blood volume and body weight due to carrying a baby. However this is not always the case and some people remain on a stable dose or even reduce in pregnancy. With careful management for some women it is even possible to come off medication altogether whilst pregnant - but be sure to discuss with your prescriber first! In other words we always try to match the individual needs of every pregnant woman.

You are absolutely right that alcohol is very bad for unborn babies and the recommended drinking limit for pregnant women is now zero units of alcohol. The pregnancy clinic at PCASS is available for any pregnant woman who needs medical help for an alcohol problem and we can offer support and prescribing as needed. It is essential for pregnant women to talk to someone if they feel they have a problem with alcohol which they can't sort out by themselves and get themselves referred for help.
