"Carers are a key part of services"

About: South Staffordshire PCT

(as a carer),

If we as carers are a key part of services, which I feel we are, we need to be recognised centrally in the trusts key objectives. It’s like oil in a car, fail to put oil in your car and it’ll break down with major consequences.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the importance of carers. We entirely agree and would like to share with you what we are currently doing to support carers from a health and social care perspective.

The Joint Commissioning Unit (where joint commissioning decisions are made for social care and health) has developed a draft strategy for Young & Adult Carers in Staffordshire which shall shortly be available for consultation. This Strategy sets out how we will shape future carer services, increase opportunities for carers and provide different types of support to carers.

The Strategy aims to shape a future where the contribution that carers make is recognised and supported. Within this strategy we want to promote methods of communication through which carers can have their views heard and be recognised as Expert Care Partners.

The Strategy has been informed by the Survey conducted by the Joint Commissioning Unit, entitled Carers at the Heart of Families and Communities whereby we had an overwhelming response of 1147 carers. This survey invited carers to share their ideas in helping to improve the support to carers.

The planned consultation on the Draft Strategy for Young & Adult Carers will provide carers with the opportunity to have their say about carer services in Staffordshire.

I hope you find this information useful, however, if you would like further information regarding Carers Services in Staffordshire please do not hesitate to contact me.
