"respite care, non existent "

About: Barnet, Enfield And Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust

(as the patient),

I have been under the mental health services for many years and recently have had issues with my neighbours who are causing me to be awake for hours on end and in the past week alone i have had 2 hours sleep.

I rang my cpn and requested help as I feel I cant cope any longer..I wanted to go away for a little while yet Ive been told there are no respite beds available in the borough and my only option would be home treatment team who would visit me daily like before but my problem is my home! so I needed to get out not stay in any longer.

I was told that she could book me for admission for a week maybe two but that I wouldnt like it as there is a long wait and not many beds and I have to be assessed first...I requested to see the psychiatrist but am still waiting to hear about respite care as i just need away from here. Barnet decided to close Kaya House as it was no longer needed but it obviously is!!! In my opinion DSU is a not a suitable place with a drug dealing problem but a refuge like Kaya House is shut forever and where oh where is the alternative that Barnet said they have?? St Anns? DSU? Springwell?

Someone help me find it coz i really need it!!!

Patient Opinion is an anonymised service. Please contact the Trust PALS service who would be happy to help with your specific concerns.

We are sorry to hear you are having problems with accessing respite. Barnet Enfield and Haringey Mental Health Trust was not responsible for the funding of Kaya house or the decision to end support, and it is not responsible for providing respite. However the Trust is in the process of providing alternative options to inpatient care.

Currently our home treatment teams are there to support people who’s mental state is such that admission to a hospital bed is being considered. They do this the following ways:

1. Intensive and regular visits at home

2. Access to the programme of activity based in the day therapies unit in addition to visits at home

3. Admission to an acute ward if the above is not appropriate

We understand that for some people, their own homes are not always the most appropriate setting to be in when in a mental health crisis. For this reason the Trust is in the process of setting up three recovery houses, one in each borough, to address this need. The Barnet house will accommodate 12 service users who will have been assessed by the Home Treatment Team as needing alternative assistance to inpatient care and support away from their homes. The Recovery houses will be clinically supported by the home treatment team.
