"Excellent surgical side let down by the catering"

About: South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I was a patient at South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre in October 2010, the surgery and support nursing staff were excellent. Unfortunately this level of excellence was matched by the food or the catering staff that delivered it. When I came out of recovery I was told there was nothing for me to eat as I had not made a food selection. Durr, I was in the operating theatre, what compounded this is the fact that I am diabetic and on insulin, I had already fasted in preparation for the op. Fortunately I had brought some food in with me, if it were not for that I could have been in a diabetic comma.

I found the catering staff I dealt with to be rude, argumentative, and they acted disinterested. In my experience they throw the food at you and I did not dare ask them for an extra roll (if you tried the soup). I think I could have put up with all this if the food was of good quality and of reasonable portion size, which I do not think it is. In my opinion sandwiches are no substitute for a hot meal, what is served up is bland.

In summary, the excellent surgical side is let down by the catering.
