"Needed better advice following procedure"

About: Leeds General Infirmary / Gynaecology Leeds PCT

(as a friend),

Cervical cancer excision. Bleeding continued for three months after operation. Local GP prescribed antibiotics which led to a thrush infection. On returning to the GP further courses of antibiotics were suggested. At no point did the GP suggest referral to a gynecologist or other specialist. Patient was in pain and experiencing contractions for most of this time. Bleeding continued to be excessive for a further three months. Finally at the 6 month check up with the colposcopist patient was told that the antibiotics were the likely cause of the infection and slow healing. I think this could have been avoided if the patient had received better advice immediately following the procedure.

Firstly, we apologise for the delay in responding to your posting on the Patient Opinion website.

Thank you for taking the time to record your friend’s experience of gynaecology services at the LGI. I was sorry to learn of the problems your friend encountered following the operation. As you say, this may have been avoided if your friend had received better advice following the procedure.

Thank you once again for taking the time to record your friend’s experience.
