"Irresponsible blood taker at Holt Park"

About: Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

(as a relative),

Hi,

I am the partner of a Warfarin taker.

Last Weds, my partner went to the clinic for the usual blood taking. Previous day she had the blood check at her Doctors. This left a thumbnail size bruize of no concern to anyone.

The woman taking the blood had a clear arm to go at but chose to enter where the bruise was and also failed to ensure it had stopped bleeding before my partner left the clinic.

Her arm swelled up to twice it's size and I found it necessary to go to A&E because we were so concerned about her condition, both visual and how she felt.

She had blood taken at A&E by the most considerate of people who assured her there would be no problem when she took it.

Visited Ward 27 three times blood taken - no problem.

I feel this woman needs to be removed from the system. After my partners experience, we both consider her to be consider her to be incompetent and inconsiderate. It is possible she has bad eyesight or wears glasses but had forgotten them on this occasion.

I would like to see something done please.

Firstly, we apologise for the delay in responding to your posting on the Patient Opinion website.

I was sorry to learn of the problems your partner encountered whilst having blood taken at Holt Park Health Centre. You state you felt the phlebotomist was incompetent and inconsiderate. You can contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service on freephone 0800 0525 270 for advice on how to make a complaint.

However, we will also pass your comments on to the Patient Relations Manager at the hospital.

Thank you once again for taking the time to record your partner’s experience.

Hi there,

As you say rather late in the day for you to comment. Did the comment get lost?

I did complain vigorously to the appropiate people. The answer was that some retraning might be in order. The final comment from the powers that be was that special care should be taken when someone is known to have especially thin blood.

As I pointed out and it was accepted as a valid point no one knows what anyone's blood situation is when they arrive at the centre. They are there for that to be ascertained are they not?

If my partner's blood required special attention then everyone should get that attention in case (as with my partner) it comes as a surprise that the blood is so thin. Wild hourses would not now get my partner to that clinic or indeed any warfarin clinic.
