"My knowledge of my dad was used to give him the best care"

About: North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

(as a relative),

Stewart Assessment Unit, St Helens

I and my family would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff on the Stewart Assessment Unit for the outstanding care, compassion and understanding shown to my dad during his short stay on the unit. I was impressed at how all the staff worked extremely well together to address my dad's individual needs and how closely they monitored him. It was really reassuring to walk away each day knowing my dad was safe and being cared for so well.

I accompanied my dad to the Unit on Christmas Eve and was feeling distressed after a week of negative experiences and apprehensive about approaching the Unit. However all these concerns quickly disappeared when the duty nurse (Karen) listened attentively, didn't rush and acknowledged all my concerns about my dad which I am very grateful for. I really felt listened to and my knowledge of my dad was used to give him the best care.

I would also like to thank Jane (nurse) who also reassured me that she would treat my dad as if it was her own dad which I am in no doubt she did.

Again, I want to thank the team on the Stewart Assessment Unit for providing my dad with exceptional treatment and outstanding care.

Thank you for taking the time to make these kind comments, and I will ensure that these are passed on to Karen and Jane, as well as all the staff in the team.

Working closely with the family is integral to the care provided for our patients on the Ward.

We needed to know as much about your Dad if we were to give him the care he deserved. As his daughter you were able to tell us about your Dad’s likes, dislikes, routines, interests etc. which then enabled us to provide the ‘person-centred care’ which is the Ward’s philosophy of care.

On behalf of all the staff on the Ward, I would like to thank you again for your kind comments, which are very encouraging for us all.

I wish you and your family all the best for the future.

Take care.

Joan O’Hanlon

Ward Manager
