"Poor quality of care and communication...."

About: Northern General Hospital

What I liked

Not a great deal.

What could be improved

My mother is still in Huntsman 4 some 4 weeks after being admitted with a broken wrist.

It appears to me that becasue she is 87 she is treated as if she does not understand what is happening to her.

Doctors instructions are not always followed and services seem to just shut down over Xmas whether they are needed or not. For example physiotherapy services are only provided to critical cases over the Xmas period even though many patients require regular physio to help them stay mobile. In addition, I was advised that there was only one consultant covering for the whole department over Xmas so any patient attendance is sporadic.

In addition, the attitude to care by some staff left alot to be desired. My daughter is a nurse and she felt that the care offered was well below acceptable. It appears that if you are old you are treated as though you are both senile and geriatric.

Communication about the care received is almost non-existent unless you push hard and it appears as though there is a total lack of liaison between the hopsital staff and social services. No one at the hospital could inform me on the status of the home care package and when this would be available to enable my mother to be discharged.

Anything else?

I have completed this feedback on behalf of my mother.

I have had two relatives in the Northern General in the last few years and have been less than happy with the care received.

Managers should take a careful look at the quality of care offered with elderly patients., especially in wardswith elderly patients.PhysiotherapyPatient careServicePhysiotherapyElderly careConsultantsDoctorsPhysiotherapistsAttitudeCommunication
