"My partner still has chest pains"

About: North Tyneside PCT

(as a relative),

My partner has been suffering from chest pain and an irregular heart beat (which I myself have heard) for months and decided to go to the GP late night service.

After getting in to see the GP he explained that he knows he can be a little anxious however he feels that the problems he is experiencing, while possibly being made worse by anxiety, are originating from something physical - possibly a hernia or something similar.

I felt the GP did not take anything he said seriously. In my opinion they had an extremely bad attitude and condescending tone. They did not carry out any physical examination whatsoever (no listening to heart, taking pulse, blood pressure etc) and appeared to be trying to rush through the appointment. They proceded to tell him there was nothing wrong (if anything it was a bit of IBS) and that he "should have a baby - then he would have something real to worry about".

I am furious that such an attitude can be shown by a GP. Even if his condition is solely caused by anxiety - how on earth is this type of attitude and "advice" going to help? A friend of ours had recently been wrongly diagnosed with IBS and it turned out to be cancer - as you can imagine this attitude and alleged possible "diagnosis" (without any kind of physical test) has not helped my partner at all.

He still has the irregular heartbeat and chest pain on a pretty regular basis, but is now completely put off about going to see anyone about it as he feels it is a waste of time and nothing will be done about it.
