Nothing. This has been a wholly unpleasant experience.

What could be improved

Communication between both patient and staff and between staff and staff!

Ward nurses had no idea what was going on. They either couldn't find doctors or were told that a doctor was busy and to find someone else.

Anything else?

My daughter was brought in to A&E having collapsed in the street in agony. After several days and an ultrasound, they diagnosed a water infection and she was discharged with antibiotics.

She was taken in again by ambulance a week later where they prescribed different antibiotics and discharged her immediately.

After another week, we were back. She was screaming in agony only to be told by 'a doctor' that it may be a gynaecological problem. However, he had no idea how to refer to the Gynaecology Department at the Hallamshire and asked if we would take her home - still screaming in pain - and ask our GP for a referral!

We explained - slowly and politely that what he suggested was a ridiculous idea as it takes up to 2 months to get an appointment and that he should find someone more senior who knew how to use a phone!

He also misplaced her notes while she was being transferred to diagnostics. A nurse came to take away the blood pressure machine, wrote down my daughter's output on a slip of paper (the chart was missing) and then put it in her pocket 'for later'. We never saw her again.

The chart was eventually found.

Eventually another medic arrived, prescribed morphine and arranged for an ambulance to transfer her to the Hallamshire. Here she was seen by a doctor on arrival and then spent a further 3 days being moved from ward to ward (during which she did not see another doctor) before finally being discharged with antibiotics for a water infection.

2 weeks later - back again. This time they said it was a water infection yet again but that there must be an underlying physical cause. My daughter was now vomiting bile and blood.

They kept her on nil by mouth for 5 days (she was given toast on 2 nights afterher op was cancelled twice).

On the day 5 they arrived to take her for a laparoscopy only to bring her back 10 minutes later. A consultant decided that she had a water infection and could be discharged!

This will not do at all...
