"My stepfather was admitted to this..."

About: Watford General Hospital

What could be improved

My stepfather was admitted to this hospital nearly 5 weeks ago, with pains in his chest, after tests he was told that he needed an operation and would be transfered to Hammesmith. He has type 1 diabetes which is very bad. No staff seem to know what to do when he has a hypo.

He was put into a side ward where it was very cold. Then yesterday my mother had to get him transferred back to the ward, where they wrapped him in a hyperthermia blanket an put a heater under it as well.

Absolutely disgusting treatment by the staff especially when we had been complaining about this room since the weekend. Where is the matron on AAU to sort these problems out. Now today other people that have been in this ward with him for 10 days are being transferrd to Harefield and Hammersmith for their operations. But my step father is still there and no one cares how much longer he has to be there either. It's outrageous that this can happen.

Anything else?

I suggest that the nursing staff are trained to cope with people who have bad diabetes in future, or someone could possibly die. And as for not being able to locate a doctor on duty on a friday is night in a large hospital like yours.

Also please listen to people when they are trying to tell you things relating to the patients welfare. It seems to me that the staff look beyond you when you are trying to talk to them as if they are not interested. We could all be like and a sorry place it would be.

As for AAU being the largest in the country, lets hope the others sites are managed better than ours.
